Today NDGAI joins the country in celebrating International Women’s Day – a global day embracing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
On this momentous day, the care sector, typically dominated by women, can be especially proud. One woman, in particular, transformed the quality of care during wartime and went on to improve healthcare all around the world, this was of course the courageous, self-sacrificing, compassionate, persistent and resolute, Florence Nightingale.
Florence Nightingale dedicated her life to helping others. Born into a wealthy family, it was frowned upon that she entered the nursing profession! Florence was asked to look after British soldiers during the Crimean War. Military hospital conditions were horrific, the care being given was poor and delivered by overworked medical staff. Hygiene was neglected and medicines were in short supply. Florence made it her mission to scrub the hospitals clean as she organised better care for wounded soldiers. Later she became a pioneer in the visual presentation of information and statistical graphs, using pie charts and other methods to present her data. She was a true conquering hero of her time and continues to be remembered as an amazing, inspirational woman who helped shape the future.
We know how incredibly dedicated our healthcare professionals work today and just like Florence, these people have an important impact on our lives and the lives of the ones we love.
Let’s make sure we thank those inspirational women in our lives today by celebrating their accomplishments!
