The COVID 19 vaccination programme has shown a phenomenal impact on the reduction of deaths in care homes with more than 1.26 million care workers in England now fully vaccinated. The impact of the vaccination programme on infections and mortality suggests the vaccination programme, as of 15 July 2021, has prevented between 11 and 12.5 million infections and between 35,200 and 38,600 deaths since its start.

As of Thursday 11th November, it will be a legal requirement for staff in  CQC registered care homes, who are not exempt, to be double vaccinated in order to be legally allowed to continue working within social care. This is a  law passed to protect the elderly and staff working in care homes.

It is estimated that up to 70,000 care home workers in England may not be fully vaccinated before the deadline. For a sector already on its knees from the damaging effects of the Covid 19 pandemic, this is a worrying time.

For families who have already lost loved ones to covid, or families with loved ones in care, having a high level of protection in care homes will reduce the risk to this very vulnerable population. However, if carer roles can’t be filled, the level and volume of care offered will be reduced and the shortage of care workers will put care homes in financially difficult positions.

Social care requires immediate funding with long term reform, the government must invest in social care; to guarantee better care for our loved ones, and provide better pay to attract a workforce of care workers to deliver more care.
